Finally we arrive at Lake Khovsgol, often called the ‘sister’ lake to Russia’s Lake Baikal (just 200km away). Traditionally Mongolians called it “Mother” for its very important place in the country’s spiritual landscape. The surface is 1645m above sea level, and it is considered one of the most scenically beautiful areas in the country. The crystal-clear lake is surrounded by mountains covered with dense taiga forest, icy streams, lush grass and fields of wild flowers.
