Shenzhen UCC – Kenda mtb race 12 May
Back home after my best performance so far. Hard training is starting to pay off. As I said in my last post the course was pretty tough, world cup style, plus it rained havily on Saturday morning. The race venue was in Long gang, about 50 minutes from Shenzhen downtown.
I tried the course with my team mates on Saturday afternnon, it was a mud feast, with a 1 meter deep mud pool to cross!I felt pretty weak and tired on those super steep climb but surpisingly confortable on the muddy descents.
As usual in China, race day is divided in a bunch of events such as kids race, amateur races, team race and of course the main elite event. I raced the team race in the morning and the elite mtb in the afternoon. Team race was fun, 4 riders (3 man and a girl) 2 laps to ride, time to be taken on the girl.
Pushing our little Xixi (our team’s girl) we managed to finish in 2nd position, just 15 sec after the first group, despite my rear tyre went flat 1 km to the line.
3 hours later I was ready to jia you (Chinese phrase for open the gas). 10 minutes before the start shot the sky turned dark.. thunders were coming.. the race committee decided to cut the race to 4 laps for safety reasons.
Off the line a long sprint to get in the first narrow singletrack with the first group. I am not a good starter.. but I managed to get on the first steep climb in the top 10. for the first lap I really struggled to stay with the top guys, I lost a couple of position on the climbs. In the second lap I started to feel better and on the third I was flying, I got back to 7 place. On the last lap buckets of rain made the course a stream. I just kept pushing on the climbs but I didn’t want to take any risks on the descents.
I finished in 7th place just 2 minutes from the podium. I am very happy with that, and looking forward for the next race which is going to be in Xi’an the 2nd of June! stay tuned
